RESEARCH ON CHILDREN WITH DEPRESSED PARENTS

Due to our own experiences with parental depression, we feel it is necessary to provide a tool for parents to use with their children in order to create better communication concerning their depression.  There is a multitude of lay information readily available at health centers or doctors' offices on the effects of parental depression.  There is littlle information available, however, on the impact of this condition on the children.  As students in the Counselor Education Program at the University of South Carolina, we are concerned and interested in first hand accounts from children of parents experiencing depression, resources and information available to help this population, and in creating a resource for depressed parents to use with their children to increase their understanding and reduce the psychological factors that may later cause the children to experience depression.
