REQUIRED (12 CREDIT HOURS):

NPSY 755    Fundamentals of Psychiatric Rehabilitation    3 Credit Hours

This course addresses the psychosocial, vocational, and independent living problems that emanate from severe, long term mental illness and the rehabilitation interventions that are being utilized to address them.  Students are introduced to a variety of issues related to living with and recovery from a severe, long term mental illness.

NPSY 756    Vocational Implications of Psychiatric Disabilities    3 Credit Hours

This course addresses the vocational needs of individuals with psychiatric disabilities.  Students are introduced to vocational assessment procedures, transition from school to work, supported employment, transitional employment, clubhouse models, and job site accommodations for individuals with severe, long term mental illnesses.

 

NPSY 757    Psychopathology for Counselors    3 Credit Hours

The course provides the theoretical background for understanding the causes, symptomatology, and preferred treatment approaches for conditions identified in the DSM-IV-TR.  Students pursuing licensure in counseling in South Carolina are prepared to diagnose and treat mental health conditions.

NPSY 758    Classification and Assessment of Mental Disorders    3 Credit Hours

This course, as a follow up to NPSY 757 provides an introduction to the use of formalized evaluations and appraisal techniques in achieving a differential diagnosis of mental disorders.  This course introduces students to several diagnostic instruments and interpretation procedures that provide important input for the design of effective treatment and rehabilitation plans.  Students pursuing licensure in counseling in South Carolina are prepared to utilize formal assessment and appraisal methods in conjunction with the DSM IV in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.

NPSY 760    Addictions Rehabilitation     3 Credit Hours

This course covers theories, treatment approaches, and psychological aspects of addictions.  Emphasis is placed upon rehabilitation models and approaches shown to be effective in promoting recovery and preventing relapse.

NPSY 761    Dual Diagnosis    3 Credit Hours

Exploration of available research and state of the art models for rehabilitation of individuals with a substance abuse/dependency and other mental illness.  Seminar format based on analysis of case studies.

RHAB 700   Introduction to Rehabilitation Counseling    3 Credit Hours

This course explores the origin, evolution, and future of the rehabilitation counseling profession.  It covers the scope of practice and underlying competencies, professional ethics, and professional development.  The purpose is to develop an understanding of the role and function of rehabilitation counselors and their professional responsibilities.

RHAB 712    Occupational Analysis and Placement in Rehabilitation    3 Credit Hours

This course explores the world of work including the vast array of jobs, job requirements, job finding resources, and worker characteristics.  Emphasis is placed on utilizing effective strategies to match workers to jobs, accommodate workers with disabilities in the workplace, and help individuals with disabilities secure employment.  The purpose is to enable students to effectively assist persons in dealing with the myriad of employment problems that emanate from disability and disadvantagement.

RHAB 714    Rehabilitation Assessment    3 Credit Hours

This course explores the personal, social, and environmental characteristics that are integral to disabilities with an emphasis on identification and measurement.  Attention is given to new technology that can facilitate identification of abilities and functional limitations and enhance functioning.  the purpose is to enable students to assess the strength, limitations, and other factors that must be dealt with to successfully cope with disability.

RHAB 730    Case Management and Community Resources    3 Credit Hours

This course provides students with an understanding of the case management process necessary for assisting persons with disabilities to negotiate their way through the complex web if services available to them.  Students are made aware of the specific community resources integral to the rehabilitation process.  The purpose is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to developing effective rehabilitation plans and ensuring rehabilitation process continuity.

STUDENTS MAY CHOOSE RELATED COURSEWORK FROM PROGRAMS UNIVERSITY-WIDE AND MAY APPLY A TOTAL OF TWELVE CREDIT HOURS OF PREVIOUSLY COMPLETED COURSEWORK TOWARD THE CERTIFICATE.

REQUIRED:

FIELD STUDY    3 Credit Hours

Students participate in site visits and field-based assignments that enable them to gain first hand experience in interacting and providing service to individuals with severe mental illnesses.  Students may choose from a number of identified sites and experiential activities or may develop their own experiential plan with instructor approval.
